Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in US. Since 1863, Thanksgiving Day is an annual tradition which is celebrated all over US officially. It started when during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln, the then President OF USA had declared this as the national day of “Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelth in the Heavens”. It was celebrated on 26th November, Thursday that year. In US, this thanksgiving is compared as the first Thanksgiving Day when the pilgrims offered their thanks to the God for guiding them and they reached safely to the New World and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. That time the Thanksgiving feast lasted for three days and the feast consisted of fish, shellfish, vegetables, fruits, grains, the harvest grains. The tradition of Thanksgiving Day is still continued and the main attraction of the feast in the modern day is the roast turkey. The other foods commonly used on this day are the mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, sweet corn, fall vegetables and pumpkin pies. During the Thanksgiving Time, the poor and less fortunate people are offered food. There are many communities who arrange for annual food drives during this time and distribute packaged and non-perishable food. The charitable organizations also distribute staple foods and Thanksgiving dinner to the poor ones. Basically it is the day to thank the Almighty for what he has given us and for his love and protection for us.
